13th Annual Summit of the NorthEast Cerebrovascular Consortium kicks off

The 13th Annual Summit of the NorthEast Cerebrovascular Consortium (NECC) will take place on Thursday, October 25th and Friday, October 26th at the Newport Marriott.

To improve stroke care in eight states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont) the NECC was established as an independent organization in 2006.

This year’s two-day event is hosted by the NECC along with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

The NECC summit will feature education through keynote presentations, evidence-based research and breakout sessions. It also provides networking opportunities for professionals in the cerebrovascular field.

Thursday morning will bring keynote presentations about the role of recovery in stem cells by Sean Savitz, MD – Professor, Department of Neurology, and Frank M. Yatsu, MD Chair in Neurology, Director, Vascular Neurology Program, UT Health in Houston, Texas.

Participants at NECC will also have the chance to hear about trial updates by Raul G. Nogueira, MD – Director, Neuroendovascular Service, Marcus Stroke & Neuroscience Center, Grady Memorial Hospital; Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Radiology, Emory University School of Medicine; Immediate-Past President, Society of Vascular & Interventional Neurology (SVIN); Editor-in-Chief, Interventional Neurology Journal in Atlanta, Georgia.

The 2018 American Stroke Association Community Conscience Award is being awarded to Olajide Williams, Medical Director of the Stroke Center at Columbia University  for his unique research based on stroke disparities in communities.

The 2018 C. Miller Fisher, MD Neuroscience Visionary Award is being awarded to Judith Lichtman, Medical Director of the Stroke Center at Columbia University, for her pioneering research on disparities in stroke

On Friday, a popular feature at last year’s summit is back –  Stroke Tank: Pitch it to the Judges! ™, a play off the hit ABC television show “Shark Tank.”

Four previously funded grant researchers will present their proposals addressing transitions of care across the stroke systems of care continuum. Votes from participants at the NECC along with an expert panel of judges will decide which proposal will receive additional funding to expand upon their original proposal.
